Disney confirms new Cirque show coming to Disney Springs

December 18, 2017, 11:32 AM · Earlier this year, the Walt Disney World Resort announced that its Cirque du Soleil production of La Nouba would close at Cirque's Disney Springs theater at the end of the year. With the Disney Quest attraction next door also closing, fans were left to wonder how radically Disney would change what used to be known as the Downtown Disney West Side.

We learned earlier that Disney would tear down Disney Quest and replace it with an NBA-themed restaurant and entertainment experience. But the changes to the Cirque site do not appear to be quite as extensive. Disney announced today that the replacement for its Cirque du Soleil show will be...

Another Cirque du Soleil show.

Okay, pretty much everyone saw this coming. And if you are now asking the next, obvious question ("what will this new show be about?") — don't bother. You know the answer.

From Disney's press release about the as-yet-unnamed production: "This original show will be created by Cirque du Soleil and will pay homage to Disney’s rich history of animation, with a vivid story told in a way that only Cirque du Soleil can deliver."

Yep, it'll be about more Disney IP.

That said, I would love to see Cirque's take on Disney animation IP. "We are incredibly inspired by Disney’s immense creative universe," Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group President and CEO Daniel Lamarre said in a prepared statement. "We are convinced that bringing Disney's magic to life on stage will touch audiences and bring them back to their childhood."

No word yet on when the new production will open. But about that name. Let's start guessing. What do you think the new name of the Cirque Disney show will be? Or should be?

I trust that Cirque will come up with something creative. Festival of the Lion King reminds me of Cirque very much, so I guess I kinda know what to expect.

This would be a double entendre in regards to an air conditioned facility, a break from all the hyperactive action all around tourists, a place to get out of the heat, what happens when you eat/drink something cold too fast, and what happened to Walt Disney's actual brain.

Frozen could be the main theming element...

With Cirques success with the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Avatar, doing a Disney themed show would not be that out of bounds. I kind of wished they kept the themeing a little more abstract like La Nouba, but I would rather see a Disney Cirque show than no Cirque show.

I am glad that Cirque is sticking around. I thought it was a good get for Disney in the first place.

My cousin saw it 10+ years ago when she was young and it's still one of her favorites. I found it better than some of the Vegas and touring productions. It's immensely better than the dreadful and short lived Iris at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. If there's more Disney and heart to the new production, I'm all for it! -Don in Anaheim

Tourists travel to WDW for Disney. This is another great, granted upcharge, Disney centric option.

Of course, all the Disney ‘haters’ will hate starting today without even seeing the show. You just gotta laugh!

December 20, 2017 at 8:36 AM · If it has Frozen in it, I will hurl and have to be forced to go see it.

I can see my manager now.."you have to go see it...you must be able to promote it..."..as I get dragged kicking and screaming up the stairs.

December 24, 2017 at 3:59 AM · It'd be interesting if we were talking about going back to very early Disney Animation, like the Alice shorts that mixed Animation and Real life. Something like that would be interesting creative fodder for Cirque. Playing in and out of screens, using or not using colour and sound in different ways. I just hope it's not Cirque du Soleil presents Moana (or any straight iP cut and paste). I'm okay with Cirqueifued Disney, not so much Disneyfied Cirque.
