Three cheers for these robot visitors to Disney World's Epcot

February 19, 2018, 2:42 PM · Here's a nifty little "plus" moment for anyone visiting the Walt Disney World Resort over the next couple days.

Some of the groups behind the SpectacuLAB at Epcot's Innoventions are bringing a team of robot cheerleaders to the park. In support of National Engineering Week, the Murata Cheerleaders are "performing" before each SpectacuLAB show.

If you are interested in the tech behind these rolling, balancing robots, Murata has some information about them on its website.

Each Murata Cheerleader is equipped with five ultrasonic microphones and four infrared sensors, installed in its head. Data from these sensors are shared via a wireless network, enabling each Cheerleader's position to be accurately located in real time. Relative positions are determined with a combination of ultrasonic and infrared signals, which travel at different speeds. It's the same principle as counting the seconds between a flash of lightning and the sound of thunder to determine distance.

The Murata Cheerleaders are appearing in Epcot for three days before continuing their tour at local schools.
