Mickey's Philharmagic opens at Disney California Adventure

April 26, 2019, 4:16 PM · The Sunset Showcase Theater in Disney California Adventure's Hollywood Land has a new tenant, and it looks like this one might stick around for a while.

Long-time Walt Disney World favorite Mickey's Philharmagic opened for its west coast run in the theater this morning. For the past few years, the Sunset Showcase has been DCA's home for extended previews of upcoming and recently released Disney films. And before that, it was the long-time home of the Muppets 3D production.

Officially, the Disneyland Resort is tying the debut of Mickey's Philharmagic to its Get Your Ears On - Mickey & Minnie Celebration, which ends June 6. But as anyone who's seen the show in Florida or at other Disney theme parks around the world can attest, the real star of this 4D show is Donald Duck. And there's no indication that this will be a limited-time run for the show, which plays at every other Disney theme park resort around the world, save Shanghai.

Mickey's Philharmagic was the first use of computer animation for many of the classic Disney cartoon and film characters when it debuted in 2003. This installation does not employ the super-wide screen used in Florida, but does supplement the theater's traditional front screen with projections on side "screens" above the entry and exit doors.

We invite viewers to rate and review the new show on our Mickey's Philharmagic page then to rate and review other Disney California Adventure attractions and restaurants on our other DCA pages, as well.

This is an awesome quick addition to DCA. This absolutely beats having those preview things in that theater and the attraction itself is a proven winner. It seemed to me that Disney also got working on this really quickly. It was seemingly announced last month and now here it is.

Does anyone know if it has the 4D elements such as smell? Or is this just the 3D show?

Finally!!! I hear so much about the show & glad it's finally at DLR. Hopefully they just keep it permanently.
The movie previews, while I understand the purpose, was mostly a waste of good attraction space.

Plus DCA is pretty heavy on Pixar (and soon) Marvel, so it's good to have another attraction based on a classic character.

According to a review I read on another site, they have the smell, but not the water. Also, the Donald AA does not move.

Nice addition to DCA. I have always been a fan of the Philharmagic at DW Magic Kingdom. I thought it held up well over the years and appreciated the relatively short wait times and length of the film. Not sure if I will ever get back to CA, but glad DLR has this in their collection now.

Again, I'm amazed it's taken so long given how long it's been such a huge fave at WDW.

They did use the extended screen projections on the side walls but it still feels like a rushed attraction filler and not something that would stay as a forever attraction.
However, now that they digitized the film, I hope they upgrade Magic Kingdoms projectors soon. The film is really showing its age there.

It's an attraction we frequently skip at WDW, and I doubt we would go out of our way to see it at DCA. For me this is just a more permanent replacement for the "filler" attractions they've put in the theater since they removed Muppets 4-D. It's an easy conversion to build a bit more interest for a "people eater", but I hope Disney is working for something a little better than this a year or so down the road.
