SeaWorld San Diego Gets a New Leader

May 12, 2021, 3:32 PM · SeaWorld San Diego has a new park president. John Dunlap has taken over for Marilyn Hannes, who has moved up to corporate as SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment's new Senior Vice President of Strategic Relationships.

Dunlap comes to SeaWorld from Iconic Attractions Group, where he was the founder and CEO. At Iconic, Dunlap oversaw the transformation of the Jungle Island theme park in Miami and the redevelopment and opening of Dubai Safari Park.

By taking over to SeaWorld San Diego, Dunlap is returning to southern California, where he worked as Director at the San Diego Zoo before starting Iconic. He previously worked for Starwood hotels and earned an MBA from Northwestern University. (Greetings, fellow Wildcat!)

SeaWorld San Diego is in the process of reopening its rides, with Shipwreck Rapids the most recent to return and Manta promised to return "very soon," according to the park. [Thursday update: It's open!] Also in the queue is Emperor, the park's new Bolliger & Mabillard dive coaster, which will be the first of its model in California when it opens. (No, there's still no date for that.) Meanwhile, the Seven Seas Food Festival continues through May 31, with Sesame Street Kids Weekends ongoing through June 6.
