Theme Parks That Never Get Built

Does anyone live in an area in which a theme park was supposed to be built, but never turned into anything but folklore?

Does anyone live in an area in which a theme park was supposed to be built, but never turned into anything but folklore? For example, I have heard about a Six Flags Tennessee for years.

I'd appreciate it if anyone has information about the possible SFT, or other stories about parks that never quite made it.

What about Disney Sea, I believe it was going to be built in California somewhere. The WOnderful World of OZ would also come under this category now and it sounded fantastic.

I believe that the park was going to be built in Long Beach when Disney owned the Queen Mary. Original name was Port Disney.

OMG, Robert. My response was that there was SUPPOSED to be this great-sounding place called WestCOT, but the geniuses decided on doing DCA instead. Not to mention that long before all this, Disney bribed Long Beach all they could to allow them to build Port Disney or something like that there, but Long Beach wanted no part of them. Which cracks me up considering I grew up in LB and besides the beach, that is one OOOOGLY town! What would some theme park blight hurt?

The other one I knew of was supposed to be a huge WB (I think) movie studio/theme park that was supposed to go in right next to Magic Mountain. I don't remember if Six Flags and WB had a deal or what, but it was also supposed to be a resort. I remember little of the whole thing, except that a big section was going to involve the Animaniacs. I think they were going to move all the artistic stuff to the new site and use the current WB lot for more of the business side. Though don't quote me on any of this. I guess since WB is now just a license for SF rather than part of the business, this may be why this disappeared. The Animaniacs may have practically disappeared (DAMMIT!) but WB has a little wizard boy that might be a good little idea for a section of a NEW park. Ya think something like that could work??????

There was talk of a WWF theme park being built, it could have been interesting. The Warner Bros Movie World near Six Flags Magic Mountain would have been a fantastic idea.

At one point there were plans to possibly build a Warner Brother's Movie World near Uxbridge, on the outskirts of West London. Planning issues prevented this, and Madrid got it instead!

I've heard for years about Six Flags TN, but the most outragious of these I've ever heard that Six Flags was intrested in buying Silver Dollar City in Pigeon Forge. But supposidley the plans never materialized and Six Flags lost intrest in TN.

Six Flags bought land in Osceola County - just east of St. Cloud, FL - it was to be a HUGE park - the most technological Six Flags THEME park - yes, they were actually going to make a THEME park based on space/future concepts. Beastly Kingdom would be AWESOME if they built it - but rather see the villain's park which turned into IOA, funny isn't? Tex Disney doesn't sound cool at all!!! I'm sorry, but there are TOO MANY Magic Kingdoms - two is plenty for the US - it kinda looses it's magic if you can go several hundred miles and experience the SAME attractions - know what i mean?? I thought Dolly built that park from scratch??? I would have LOVED for World of OZ to make it - maybe they should try it in FL? They need something in Miami or Jacksonville - if they ever did the monorail system in FL them you could go to all the parks in the state so easily -how gas efficient that would be and less people cramming on I4!!!!! GRRR!!! Sorry, but tourists don't know how to drive - gotta love the British though :)

I heard several years ago that a major theme park was to be built near the I-77 and I-81 interchange in VA. If you have ever been through the area, it is miles of farmland. Also there is a mall there that was supposedly built to prepare for the expected crowds. Nothing happened and the mall is loosing merchants.

Rumour floating around Southern Ontario that Six Flags is going to buy Toronto's Centreville Amusement park and make it into a big SF park. Might give PCW a run for its money (Nah! not likely!) No official word yet though, so this does fit into this thread! Anybody know a little more?

Six Flags was supposedly going to partner up with the Foxwoods Casino in Eastern Conecticut to build a theme park there. That was a rumor back around 1996-1997. Then they went and bought and refurbished Riverside Park near Springfield, MA and made it Six Flags New England in 1999. So I guess the Foxwoods plan is a no go now.

There have also been varying rumors about a theme park being built adjacent to South Boston along the Boston Harbor waterfront. Apparently even Disney expressed some interest, possibly to do their historical theme park idea, but tied into Colonial stuff instead of Civil War. Those ideas really never went anywhere though.

okay well im alittle late with this on but a Disneyland Australia was supposed to be built on the Goldcoast of Australia however due to political arguments over it we lost it and it went to Hong Kong, another one was a dollywood dixy stampede to be built across the road from sea world on the Goldcoast this was due to open around now but has not even started construction yet.

Disney's America was briefly mentioned in this thread, but nobody went into any detail about it. Anyway, Disney wanted to build a theme park centered around the history of the USA. They wanted to build it in Northern Virginia, near the Civil War Battle of Manassas. Disney claimed the park would be much smaller and different than its other parks, but battlefield and nature preservationists disagreed. They thought the park would create too much traffic and destroy the battlefield that has been preserved for 150 years. They also feared Disney would inaccurately portray the civil war in a much-too-happy context. Disney claimed it would be historically accurate and offered to build new roads, but it didn't matter. They were driven away and the park was never built.

Another theme park in Northern Virginia that never happened was Legoland. Woodbridge, Virginia was one of the final canidates for the park's location, but they ultimately decided to build it in California instead. I was heartbroken by this decision. Lego was my favorite childhood toy!

I live in mid-east Missouri and in the mid 1980's a huge rumor swept through our area that Disney had sent several investor/executive types who were looking to buy several hundred acres of land near where I live. At first I thought it was just one of those urban legends (or to be more appropriate -- a rural legend). At that time, we heard that Disney was looking to build a theme park centered around animals and most of us thought it would be just a glorified drive-through zoo and that it would only be a seasonal park, due to our climate. We were disappointed because most of us were expecting the Fantasy/Epcot brand of theme park. (In retrospect, it is strange that Animal Kingdom was built in Orlando soon after... and that it is my favorite land at WDW).
These rumors persisted to the point of farmers and landowners in the area targeted raising the price of land to an unprecidented high. Local investors were talking about building hotels, gas stations, etc., and... just as we were expecting to see something fantastic... it all just fizzled. I just wish I knew for sure whether Disney had really considered the midwest for a park, or whether it was all just some elaborate hoax.
It would be great if Disney would put some kind of park in the midwest... for those of us who can afford Disney... but just not the airfare to fly there.

The American Adventure (here at TPI) was supposed to become Adventure World, a theme park based on different countries round the world. It was headed by John Broome, the man behind Alton Towers until it was bought in 1990. He had a plan for a giant coaster, a flying island, even a holiday village! But only two things happened. The American Adventure World and The flying island. John Broome left with his cash in wallet, the park nearly closed permenately in 2000, The Flying Island left with the 'World' at the end of the name. Better than 25 years ago, there were proposals to build an aeronautical themed park called "Aero World" in the Miramar/Mira Mesa district in San Diego, as well as a more recent plan to build a water park in Poway. They decided the land was more valuable for developing commercial buildings.

In Atwater, California a couple of years ago they were to build a theme park in the mostly vacant Castle Air Force base but I believe it was just a scam. The developers were local folk who set up office in a vacant 7-11. They had drawings,a model of the park, posters, etc. The developers talked about how this would be the only theme park built next to a Amtrak. Folks would stop at the park before making there way to Yosemite National Park which is very close. I believe there were many investors but no park was ever built. The local newspaper did stories on the proposed park but again I believe it was just a scam to take peoples money.

When Opryland Themepark in Nashville, Tennessee was going through financial trouble in 1997, there were rumors that Six Flags and/or Disney was interested in buying the themepark from Gaylord Entertainment and converting it into a Six Flags Over Music City or Disney Tennessee! Unfortunately, the Opryland Themepark was closed in December of 1997 and replaced by Opry Mills "Mega-Mall!" Dollywood Themepark continues to thrive in Eest Tennessee, but there is talk that a new themepark is being considered in Nashville, called Thrillopolis! No Six Flags or Dinsey in Tennessee!!

There use to be a SixFlags waterpark in Miami, FL. It closed in Feb. 1992. New rumors suggest that they are considering putting a theme park there. But talk of that has been circulating around since 1999. I doubt this is true. But yet Boomers is a thriving attraction to see. (They have a wooden coaster called Miami Screaming)

There was suppose to be a new Six Flags theme park built in central New Hampshire several years ago. It was going to be in a town called Meredith right near Lake Winnepesaukee. They had gotten all the land they needed for the park except for one section that an old man owned. He wouldn't give up his property so Six Flags scratched the project. This park would have practically been in my backyard...Sniffle,Sniffle

Disney was supposed to build an animal-themed park in the Orlando area that was an amazing blend of real and imaginary animals that would be as big a hook as Magic Kingdom and EPCOT combined, with state-of-the-art rides, and amazing interactive animal attractions....it was supposed to be called Animal Kingdom, but I don't think they ever built such a park...there is a nice tourist trap located where the suggested site is/was, though...but people still have to go to Busch Gardens for a decent interactive animal park in Florida...

You know, I've heard rumors about that as well for several years now- I know that there has been an awful lot of construction (and demolishing) of buildings near the old site of CircusWorld/Baseball & Boardwalk- there is also word that the area around there is going to house a mega-mall not too far from Baseball City- the location is ideal for a theme park - between Orlando and Tampa, easy interstate access (I-4 runs through Baseball City), a good number of hotels right there, a large amount of undeveloped land sitting there, and only 5 minutes from Disney Property, not to mention another major 4-lane route (US 27)right there; it's almost a no-brainer, but that has been a rumor for so long, I don't think anything will come of it.

Before Carlsbad was selected for the final location for Legoland California, the company had reportedly considered a large area about a mile from my (former) home in Santee (about 45 minutes from Carlsbad). Jeez, I coulda walked to Legoland!

I assume it was transportation/transit issues that kept Lego from building the park there. The site is a couple miles from any freeways, and two of them are dead ends. Light rail was about half a mile away from the site, I think. Carlsbad was, and still looks to be, the best San Diego location possible.

Fairfield's up north of the Bay Area, on the road to Sacramento. The former Busch Gardens park in California was located in Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.

Trivia: That was the second Busch Gardens. The first was a botanical gardens located in Pasadena.
