Have you ridden the new Spaceship Earth?

December 8, 2007, 5:24 PM · Epcot's brought its landmark Spaceship Earth attraction back from an extensive rehab for a soft opening. Readers submitted the following reports:
  • Orlando Sentinel
  • Theme Park Ave

We had the spoilers on the Spaceship Earth changes on the Blog Flume a few months back. I'm looking forward to read what TPI members have to say about how they came off on our Spaceship Earth review page.

I seem to like this new theming of it since it seems that they are keeping some of the more iconic scenes in such as the Egyptians, Romans, and Cavemen. The video was interesting too. I would have liked to have seen Jermey Irons AND Dame Judi Dench. I think it would have made it a little better!

The two major new scenes, the computer room and garage, are very cool and well done. But the transition from the garage before the PC to the future is way too fast.

Once you start to descend back to Earth, the questions appear on the screen and you answer them. It then makes a video out of these questions. It is cool that they can do this, but it just seems out of place and pointless. The entire way going back down is dark, except for the beginning in which there are very, very cool lights you go through.

Overall, the ride is good, but the end does still not come together well. I believe they will get it right though. To me it seems that they took the complex meanings out of the ride and dumbed it down, which I do not like. This will be a great ride when it is all done.

December 13, 2007 at 12:07 PM · The first half is great. Then it goes downhill quickly.

In the previous version, when you were spun around at the top and see the projection of Earth, the voice said "[...] our Spaceship Earth" and then there it was, the Earth, the beautiful music, etc.

Now the narrator is still rambling about the future and the music is not inspiring at all. It's not as dramatic as it once was.

And then the descent is pretty much down in complete darkness except for a few stars here and there so that, I guess, you concentrate on the screen. The cartoon will got old fast after a couple of rides. However, the scenery in the descent looks very temporary. It's just badly installed black fabric with a white star field. I'm hoping that something more impressive will go there.

It's like 2 people designed the ride. One who gets it and one who doesn't.
