On the Road to Diagon Alley: The Leaky Cauldron

May 5, 2014, 10:50 AM · Universal Orlando Resort has distinguished itself in recent years through its leadership in incorporating food into the themed entertainment experience. Not only can you visit and ride attractions in iconic destinations such as Harry Potter's Hogsmeade and The Simpsons' Springfield, but you can eat meals straight out of those franchises in these lands, as well.

As a result, themed food and beverage items such as Butterbeer, Krusty Burgers, and Flaming Moes have become as popular attractions for the resort as its acclaimed rides such as The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man or Revenge of the Mummy.

Universal will expand its commitment to culinary themed entertainment in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley, opening later this year at Universal Studios Florida. We recently wrote about Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour, but the main dining location in Diagon Alley will be The Leaky Cauldron.

In the books and movies, The Leaky Cauldron was Harry Potter's first stop back in the Wizarding World after being sent to live with his Muggle aunt and uncle when he was an infant. Hagrid brought Harry through The Leaky Cauldron pub on their way into Diagon Alley to buy Harry his books and supplies before his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizarding.

The Leaky Cauldron

In Universal Studios Florida's version, visitors will find The Leaky Cauldron on their left as they enter Diagon Alley. The counter-service restaurant will serve British pub fare, much like The Three Broomsticks in Islands of Adventure. Universal's not yet officially announced the menu for The Leaky Cauldron, but Universal PR representatives have tweeted photos of some of the items team members have sampled in preparation for the restaurant's opening.

Leaky Cauldron food

The selections included fish n' chips, bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes), Scotch eggs, cheeses, a savory pie, and what looks like a Toad in a Hole — sausages baked into, essentially, a Yorkshire pudding.

Universal is continuing to work with Stuart Craig, the production designer from the Harry Potter films, on the design of Diagon Alley, including The Leaky Cauldron, so we can expect this restaurant to look much like its counterpart from the films, but in larger, three-dimensional space, of course.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley is expected to open next month, though soft openings of The Leaky Cauldron and other locations in the new land could begin as early as this month. We've heard that Universal will begin installing the fire-breathing dragon atop Gringotts bank sometime in the next week or two, completing what will certainly become the iconic photo opportunity in the new land.

If you're in the Orlando area, or planning to visit this month, please email themeparkinsider@gmail.com any photos or video of Diagon Alley, should you be among the lucky first visitors in a soft open, so we can share those images and videos with your fellow Theme Park Insider fans around the world!
